Consider this 20 second safety exercise

Your parents probably prepared you to deal with strangers safely.

They taught you...

  • What danger looked like

  • What to say/do if you felt threatened

  • When to call for help

  • Who to get help from

The reality in online games today is that...

  • Strangers are everywhere (and hidden behind avatars)

  • Threats blend in with normal gameplay

  • Trust is built faster

  • Most kids can't recognize risk until a situation is already progressed

And since most parents didn’t grow up gaming, they aren’t sure how to guide their kids through it.

That missing safety preparation is showing up in the numbers

Online games are different from the rest of the internet.

And old safety rules break down inside of them.

Problem #1:

Outdated rules that don't fit the environment

The safety advice most parents rely on was built for browsing the internet — not for games where talking to strangers and interacting is almost unavoidable.

Problem #2:

Your child has to decide what is safe in real time

When rules don’t clearly fit to gaming, kids are left making fast judgment calls under the pressure of gameplay — at times when they can't stop to ask for help.

Problem #3:

Behaviors that win games work against safety

Most games reward speed, cooperation, and quick decisions. This goes against what most online safety recommends, but most parents don't recognize these conflicts.

Raising Safe Gamers gives parents the missing context

Understanding the environment

See what shapes gaming environments, why “normal” looks different than real life, and how those differences influence a child’s behavior while playing.

The hidden mechanics shaping trust and risk

Learn how games build trust faster than real life, work against traditional safety instincts, and allow bad actors to blend in with normal gameplay.

Safety in the language of gamers

Teach your child to spot unsafe gaming interactions, understand them in context, and prepare them to respond in ways that protect them during gameplay

Here's what is covered in Raising Safe Gamers

  • Part 1: Understanding the world your child is in

Why safety works differently in gaming, how norms shape behavior, and why gaming spaces can feel disarming for kids.

  • Part 2: How gaming environments work against safety sense

Exploring the gaming dynamics that influence safety behaviors, and shape how trust is built and decisions are made.

  • Part 3: How scams actually show up inside games

A practical walkthrough of common gaming scams, how they blend into normal gameplay, and what parents need to be aware of if a scam does occur.

  • Part 4: How predators use gaming environments

A step-by-step look at how predators can initiate and progress relationships using gaming — and how harmful intent can hide behind normal in-game interaction.

  • Part 5: Teaching safety in the language of gaming

A simple framework parents can use to move beyond blanket rules, and instead help kids recognize unsafe patterns or situations and respond in ways that make sense during gameplay.

  • Part 6: Supporting safety beyond the conversation

A look at different roles parents can fill to protect their gaming child, household norms, and tech settings as part of a broader safety strategy.

Equip your family - and help another family do the same

Online gaming is social.

Kids play with friends, and safety get easier when more parents are teaching the same things.

That's why we're making it possible to do this together.

  • It's easier when you have another parent on the journey with you

  • Kids are safer when their friends are hearing the same safety message

  • Safer gaming communities start with informed families

Our mission is to keep kids safer by equipping parents.

So instead of equipping just one family at a time, we want to equip two.

Hi, I’m Stephen.

Long-time gamer, tech professional, and the creator of Raising Safe Gamers.

I’ve been playing games for as long as I can remember. I’ve watched games evolve from simple, offline fun into complex, social, always-connected environments.

A background in tech paired with my enjoyment of gaming led me to start running online gaming events for kids — safe, structured, parent-approved spaces.

I wanted to pair those events with some basic gaming education for parents, so when I couldn’t find any gaming-specific resources to point them toward, I decided to create one myself.

That became a “Parents’ Guide to Online Gaming” presentation - to help parents understand the spaces their kids were entering during those events.

This combination of events and educating ended up giving me a front-row seat to see how kids actually behave in games — while also opening up many conversations with parents.

It quickly became apparent that even the most involved parents found gaming to be a tough part of their parenting journey.

Parents were putting in real effort to teach safety principles and keep their kids safe online. But from a gamer’s perspective, it was easy to see how the traditional internet safety advice they were working with - built for browsing the web - left big gaps and often didn’t fit the situations young gamers actually face inside online games.

It wasn’t a parenting problem.

It was a context problem.

In just one generation, technology changed enough that many safety conversations became outdated and no longer fit the gaming environments where kids now spend so much time.

Think of Raising Safe Gamers as an "expansion pack" to the safety conversation - the online gaming edition. It draws from decades of gaming experience, countless hours watching and playing alongside kids in online games, and hundreds of conversations with parents who want to guide their kids well.

Tech may have changed how and where kids spend their time, but one thing hasn't changed:

The most powerful safety conversations still happen between parents and their kids.

Raising Safe Gamers was created to help parents keep having those conversations.
